So Olympia isn’t quite as glam as Cannes. And the cycle ride there won’t come with quite the same sense of achievement. But MIPIM’s organisor, Reed MIDEM, is still bringing a taste of Riviera dealmaking to town with the launch of MIPIM UK.
The new three-day event, which takes place in October next year at Olympia in London, was announced at a bash for 300 property types at Claridges last night (24th October), where London’s Deputy Mayor Ed Lister and former Lord Mayor Sir Michael Bear (fresh off the boat from a trade trip to China with Boris and George) took to the stage alongside FTI’s Giles Barrie, MIPIM’s Julien Sausset and Estates Gazette’s Damian Wild to make the necessary toasts. A lot of which focused on the amount of time everyone has spent in Cannes. Sausset pointed out that Brits had always been the “bedrock” of MIPIM in France – especially in the bars and restaurants; Lister remarked that “you don’t have to encourage investors very hard to come to London” before musing that estate agents are now “the respectable face of London”, having been superceded as national pariahs by journalists and MPs.
Surprisingly, really, MIPIM UK will be the first nation-wide forum to bring all sides of the property industry together, with resi, office, retail, industrial, healthcare and sports property all getting top billing.
