The snazzily-designed new T-Pylon (which we reported on last month here) is being rolled out for the first time in the UK, at Hinkley Point in Somerset.
It’s a definite improvement on the old-school lattice-work towers, and stands a good 15 metres shorter (at 35m). Danish firm Bystrup won the Pylon Design Competition back in 2011, beating off 250 rival entries to the DECC / RIBA / National Grid-run contest. Pylons are, according to a survey by Green & Co, the worst of the property blights, with 70% of people being unwilling to buy a home near power towers (read more here). The new design won’t be replacing existing pylons any time soon, but will be “an option” for new lines and networks.
